Yesterday we did the drive from Barrie, Ontario to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan (pronounced Soo Saint Marie). Those of us who grew up in Michigan know exactly how to pronounce the name and what the Soo Locks are. But let’s talk about the drive first.
Who knew Northern Ontario, Canada was so rocky? Descriptions of what we saw are with the pictures in the slide show (I hope).
Then it was was time to cross into the USA again. To do so, you had to cross the St. Mary’s River. This river connects Lake Superior to Lake Huron. Until the Soo Locks were built in the late 1800’s, boats couldn’t move from one lake to another.
Our campground was right on the river. That meant we could see the freighters up-close and personal! We spent some time just watching the river traffic. When we did see a big freighter head for the locks, we jumped in the Jeep, drove down to the Soo Lock Visitors Center, and watched it go through the locks.
This morning, we saw a gorgeous sunrise out the coach window. I snapped a few photos, and then heard a ship’s horn. Sure enough, I saw freighter come upriver. Freighters can be considered pretty in the sunrise!
That’s enough for now. We are headed further west to meet up with Jim’s brother for the Labor Day weekend. Plus this Internet connection is so slow, writing a blog is painful! So it will be a few days before you hear from us again.
