Where have we been the past 10 days? Flying (low in the RV) across the country to get home in time to move a daughter home from college next week! We’ve logged a lot of miles during those 10 days, but still managed to see a few things.
Visiting Aliens
Most have probably heard about a mysterious incident back in the 1947 where aliens purportedly crashed in Roswell, New Mexico and the government’s cover-up of the incident. Roswell has built a tourism business around the alleged cover up. Since we were passing through Roswell anyway, we took an hour to visit their UFO Museum. For $5 each and an hour of our time, we were treated to affidavits from witnesses, maps, newspaper articles, etc. The best part was probably their animated display. I shot a video of it.
Pretty funny, eh? They also had an alien studio prop from the movie Roswell. After seeing the prop and the movie poster, we just had to see the movie itself. We hunted it down a couple of days later and thoroughly enjoyed it. There were a number of B grade actors (and Martin Sheen, the only big star) in the movie that we recognized. We can now say we have been to Roswell AND seen the movie.
Pushing East
Back on the road, the next destination was Ardmore, Oklahoma. We found a nice state park there and we took a few days to do laundry, grocery shop, etc. I took a few pictures, but nothing exciting. Then we stopped in the Hot Springs, Arkansas area. We didn’t visit Hot Springs National Park, instead opted to visit some folks we met in Shipshewana, Indiana about a year ago. They had told us about their terrific community, so we thought we would check it out. Again, no exciting pictures.
Thank you to those who reached out to us to see if we were in Oklahoma when all the tornadoes hit. We had been watching the weather pretty closely and made sure we were out of there before it did.
100,000 Miles!
Again, back on the road. The Blue Flame hit 100,000 miles! Now the engine is officially broken in.
Almost Home
We made a stop in Casey, Illinois the next night and kept driving the next day. That brings us to the final stop for this adventure, Geneva State Park which is just east of Cleveland, Ohio. That is where we are currently sitting. It’s a lovely park on Lake Erie, and it is early enough in the year that very few people are here.
We visited a winery for a tasting and sat on a patio overlooking Lake Erie.
We also watched a backhoe on a barge dredge the entrance to the state park’s marina. Jim was thrilled with that.
Oh yes, we also had a flat tire on the Jeep. There was a screw in the tire that I must have “found” when I drove into town yesterday for supplies. Thank goodness it didn’t happen while we were towing Jeep! If we get a flat while towing we would never know it unless someone honked at us…or we buy an expensive TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System). We just may end up buying a TPMS yet.
Home again
We will be home tomorrow (Sunday). The final tally is 9 weeks, 13 states and 6700 miles with most of the time being spent in Arizona and New Mexico. We loved the Southwest. I could get use to their dry heat. I suspect we will be back there next Spring. But next time we hopefully will get going before our RV gets snowed in like it did this year. It’s now time to plan our next adventure (after we mow the grass, trim the shrubs, open the mail, etc.)! Also a quick thanks to Brenda who took care of our mail and our neighbors who watched our house and mowed our lawn. THANKS!
This here sure is a big country that we live in and the people across the “pond” don’t realize that we can’t get in the car and drive to CA in a day. Sounds like you have had another nice adventure. Welcome home — when you get here!!!
