After our 8 days in civilization in Indio, it was time to move on. Our friends Dan and Amy had caught up with us and we decided to wander our way towards Death Valley. Wandering meant we were going to make a several day stop at Sawtooth Canyon.
Jim spotted the Sawtooth Canyon Campground on one of the many websites we use to find free camping. We would be dry camping (no hookups) on BLM land. The price was right…FREE! The place did not disappoint. Located just south of Barstow, California, it is 12 campsites set among rocks. The rocks are popular with rock climbers.
Here is an overview of what our campsite looked like. Photo credit goes to Dan and his drone. I know Dan will have some epic drone video coming of area, but that will have to wait until he has 1) time to put it together and 2) better connectivity for uploading the video to YouTube. Here is our camping site from another angle. The official campsites had ramadas and fire pits. There were lots of other unofficial campsites where smaller rigs would squeeze in between the rocks. The large rock we chose to park ourselves next too is very popular with rock climbers. During our stay, without leaving our campsite, we were treated to the sight of people scaling the rocks. We had a free campsite AND entertainment!
The nights were chilly (in the 40s), and extra blankets were needed on the bed. But during the day, the sun was bright and warmed things up considerably. We had ample time to explore the area.
This gives you an idea of how far away from everything we were, and yet, the cell signal was pretty good. We were enjoying the best of both worlds; the beauty of nature during the day and streaming Netflix at night. We took a walk over to a small cave up one of the slopes. Dan, Amy and Jim climbed up to the cave. My knee is not ready for a climb like this yet, although it is doing MUCH better.
Even though it is only February, the wildflowers are starting to come out.
Next to the tiny purple flower is the strap of my trekking pole. That gives you an idea of how small this flower is.
It was nice to take a few days to slow down. Sawtooth Canyon was a beautiful place to do it in.
Whoa — those are some “rocks.” Glad that Jim’s knees are up for a little climbing and glad that your knee is showing improvement. What a treat to have sunshine 🙂

What is going on with your knee?
