We are finally home from Las Cruces, New Mexico. Jim was released from the rehab hospital on Monday, August 15. In anticipation of that event and knowing that Jim would not be able to drive the RV (and his reluctance to get on a plane), we flew our friend Doug down from Michigan to drive the Blue Flame and us home. HUGE thanks to Doug and his wife Leola for making this happen. HUGE THANKS!
After a late afternoon discharge that Monday, Doug drove Jim and the RV an hour east to Alamogordo, New Mexico. I followed behind in the Jeep a few hours later, still needing to pick up multiple prescriptions from Walgreens and meet the CVS courier for a delivery of the IV antibiotics.
Tuesday morning, the cross country drive began in earnest. Jim spent most of the time on the couch. Doug drove. I navigated and played nurse. We were administering the antibiotic via a push IV (i.e. syringe) at a rest area each day. I’m glad no one was looking in the window, it would have looked suspicious! Doug was a real trooper and got us across the country in 3 long days. We got home last Thursday and are very glad to be here.

Jim will be seen by the in-home RRH infusion team starting tomorrow. On Tuesday he sees his knee surgeon. His PCP and the URMC infection disease doctor is the following week. Now it’s just a waiting game to see if the antibiotics kill the infection in his knees. Today he is walking a little better and the pain meds are doing what they are supposed to do.
I would be remiss if I didn’t back up a little and say that Janelle’s doctoral graduation (while Jim was hospitalized) was WONDERFUL! Callie flew in and surprised Janelle. Friends who used to live in Spencerport, Martha and her daughter Christiana, drove down from Dallas and surprised Janelle again. Jim got to watch the ceremony via a live stream. Considering the circumstances, it was a very successful weekend. We are very proud of both our PhDs.

So that’s it for us for a while. We have no idea when we will be able to be on the road traveling again. To quote an old boss of mine, “Life is not a dress rehearsal.” Do what you want to do while you can. We plan on doing exactly that, hopefully sooner than later.
Great picture of you and your daughters!!! I think that if Jim had been there — he would have been taking the picture:)
Hope all goes well with the upcoming appointments. Enough is enough.
