Start of a new year – 2023

We are back on the road again. After the holidays, we left Rochester and headed west again.

Here we go, over the Mississippi River once again!

We were fortunate to meet up with Jim’s brother and sister-in-law again. They were headed from Wisconsin to the Southeast. We were going to the Southwest. We made our paths cross! We had some nice family time for a few days.

Jim’s brother had selected a very nice Corp of Engineers campground on Merrisach Lake in Arkansas. It was off season, so the park was very quiet. No complaints from us!

After our visit with family, we pushed onward to Las Cruces. We had to see what was happening with the new house. (You can see the house progress at https://house.cjsquare.com.)

As usual, we parked at the Las Cruces Elks Lodge, our home away from home. Our longtime friends and now RVing buddies Dan and Amy joined us the next day. We’ll be bopping around the Southwest together this Spring.

We took a drive up to Dripping Springs Natural Area. It looks down on the Mesilla Valley where Las Cruces is located.
Looking in the opposite direction, you can see the Organ Mountains.

Then we got a real surprise. We had to run up to the new house one afternoon and agreed to meet Dan and Amy at a microbrewery near the Elks Lodge. We arrived first and were waiting for them to join us. When they walked up, we saw there were three people, not two. “That looks like Paul. What? Wait…That IS Paul!”

Paul is one half of Paul and Kay, our friends from Maine. We first met them in 2017 at a FMCA Rally and have been fast friends ever since. We introduced them to Dan and Amy, so we are all buddies. Unbeknownst to us, Paul had flown into Phoenix to purchase a new RV. He knew where we were staying, and decided to surprise us by just showing up in Las Cruces. Surprise us he did!!!

L to R, Paul, Corinne, Dan, Amy (and Jim behind the camera). Kay…we missed you!
There we are, all lined up at the Elks Lodge. L to R – Paul, Dan and Amy, and the Blue Flame.

It is great when you can meet up with friends, old and new, on the road.

While in Las Cruces, I got a new toy…a Starlink setup! For those who aren’t familiar with Starlink, it is a company founded by Elon Musk. It provides internet via satellites circling the earth. Our new house only has DSL available to it. Can you say SLOOOOWWWWWW? I put our name on the Starlink waiting list and the unit arrived during our stay. Yay!

My Starlink satellite dish! We are getting speeds up to 100 Mbps down. It is destined for the house, but I am enjoying using it while in the RV!

I also found time to drive up to Albuquerque for a day to visit my Dad. He is doing well in assisted living. It was great to see him.

Say “Cheese” Dad!

Dan and Amy have now departed and moved further west, but we will meet up with them again next week in Arizona. In the meantime, we moved to the driveway of a very nice neighbor across the street from our new home. They provided us with a 50 amp plug for power. We love the Elks Lodge, but driveway-surfing is much more affordable!

I took this picture from our front yard. You can see the Blue Flame across the street. We have a great vantage point from which to monitor progress on the house.

So, we will tend to house stuff for the next week, then we are off to Arizona for a few weeks. Let’s see what kind of trouble we can get up to there. It feels good to be back on the road.
