Lake Sakakawea

It was time to head east to the other side of North Dakota for the Sugar Beet Harvest.  Jim had once again signed up to work the harvest.  More on that in the next blog post.

We had a few days until we had to be in Grand Forks for the harvest, so we decided to stop at Lake Sakakawea State Park.  Are we ever glad we did.  This North Dakota State Park definitely rates five stars.

Lake Sakakawea State Park is on a lake that was formed by damming the Missouri River. We were once again in Lewis and Clark territory (those guys got around).  The blue dot is our campsite.  We were surrounded by water!

And here we are. We had water views and full hookups!

We could watch the sun rise out of one window of the RV.

And then watch the sun set out a window on the other side of the RV.

We didn’t do a whole lot while at the state park.  It was time for some R & R.

We celebrated our 34th wedding anniversary while here by grilling steaks. The wind was kicking up some, so Jim set up his grill station using the RV as shelter.

The North Dakota Fish Hatchery was just down the road from the state park.  They offered a self guided tour of their facilities.  I couldn’t believe you could just walk in, grab a brochure, and wander through the buildings at your leisure.

By damming the Missouri River, many of the native river fish species would not survive in a lake. So this fish hatchery sees that those fish species survive in other places.  They also hatch fish that can survive in the lake for sport fisherman.

They also had snapping turtles and painted turtles.

How do you feed that many fish?  With an automated fish food belt of course.  The food is spread out on a belt and a motor gradually moves the belt and dumps the food into the tank.  Clever!

We had one day where the wind really kicked up.  We had 18 mph sustained winds with gust up to 30 mph.

The lake looked like this one day.

And like this the next. We were thankful for 50 amp power. We had both space heaters running keeping the RV toasty warm. The lake was amazing to watch.

Alas, our time at this park came to an end.  But the harvest, friends and Grand Forks awaited us!  It was time to hit the road.
