We survived the first week in our new RV! Can you hear the cheering?
Springfield, Illinois was very interesting. I feel like we had a crash course on Abraham Lincoln with a bit of Thomas Jefferson tossed in. I’ll just give you the highlights here!
We spent the first day at the Lincoln Museum in Springfield. Since it was cold and rainy, it seemed appropriate to be indoors. This museum is very much worth the visit! It is VERY well done. We concluded the day of Lincoln Studies with a “Shoe” also known as a Horseshoe Sandwich. (<— Click there for a description) For those from Rochester, think of it as a kind of upside-down garbage plate with a few different ingredients. We could just feel our arteries clogging.
- The Lincoln Museum and Library – worth the visit
- A “Shoe” at a local tavern.
We visited St. Louis next, with the highlight being the Gateway Arch. I had visited here as a kid back in, ahem, the early 70’s. I seem to recall fitting into the egg shaped elevator car to the top a little easier back then.

- Leola and Corinne squished into the egg shaped elevator
- At the top of the arch
- The view from the top
- Doug and Leola enjoying the view
We also visited Lincoln’s house in Springfield and his tomb.

On Saturday we left the Springfield area. Leola and Doug headed back to Michigan while we headed to Chicago.
Since we are in Callie’s neck of the woods, she deserves a visit. Jim excelled at driving the RV into Chicago (we parked it in an empty UIC parking lot). I followed behind in the van.
- Blue with the Willis (aka Sears) tower in the background
- Chicago deep dish pizza for dinner
Tonight we are in a campground in Indiana…tomorrow the RV goes to the factory for the bedroom remodel and we head home without Blue. But we’ll be back down here in a couple of weeks to retrieve the RV for good!
Glad to hear that all is going well. The sandwich — pass — pizza looked pretty good.
