Where to begin? If I don’t post on a regular basis, I forget all that we have done since the last post. It seems so long ago since we were in Oklahoma!
We departed Oklahoma and sped across the Texas Panhandle. This part of Texas is long straight roads and cows. Move along….
Welcome to New Mexico!
Our destination that day was Albuquerque, where my brother Jim and his family have lived for the past 20 years. It was a good weekend. I hadn’t seen some of the family members for 7 years, but we picked up right where we left off! The weekend was full, we attended a nephew’s track meet (Go Matthew!), visited Old Towne, ate, and basically hung out.
After a weekend of family fun, we were headed west. I-40 was the road of choice, and it pretty much follows the old Route 66, the main road from Chicago to Los Angeles before the Interstate Highway system was put into place. At some point, we will hop off I-40 and take Route 66. But not today.
Our destination the first day was El Malpais, a field of 3000 year old lava flows. This gave us a chance to break out our new trekking poles and try them out. The poles held up well on our two hikes, our knees didn’t. Ouch!
The next morning, we visited El Morro, a huge sandstone bluff where people have been carving their names and dates since the early 1600’s. Call it ancient graffiti. Of course, they don’t let people do it any more, but it was interesting to see the signatures of Spanish explorers.
That concludes New Mexico. Next destination…Arizona.
Thanks for sharing.
