We’ve been to the Moon!

We’ve been to the Moon…sort of.  If you are ever in Idaho, you HAVE to visit Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve.  And when you are there, you HAVE to take all the hikes.  We had no idea what to expect when we decided to visit.  it was totally worth the visit.

Craters of the Moon is a 2000 year old lava flow.  The landscape is just so eerie.  They have a first come, first served campground, so we made sure we got there early.  That meant we spent the previous night not too far away “dry camping” at a Wal-Mart in Idaho Falls.  Jim did a little RV maintenance at sunrise and I went shopping both the night before and that morning.  I don’t think I would always want a Wal-Mart in my backyard, but it came in handy this day!

The campground at Craters of the Moon is totally unique.  It was a little tough squeezing Blue in amongst all those lava rocks, but Jim pulled it off!

We did some hiking to some caves (also known as Lava Tubes) that afternoon.  The next morning, we were on the trails by 7:15 a.m. to take advantage of the cooler temperatures and lack of people.  There is nothing to compare with seeing the sun rise over a lava field.  Again, the pictures will speak for themselves.

Next stop, Boise, Idaho to see family!
